Marlborough Playground in Southwark, London

London, UK

About the project

In the heart of London, in the shadow of the Shard, Marlborough Playground lies on Union Street in Southwark. The site was given to the people of Southwark in 1920 by the Duchess of Marlborough, Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan.

A pitch among the flats

Green SoccerGround boards frame an artificial turf here, its lines marked for other games as well as football. Flats and offices surround it, the Shard rises above, and bunting with the flags of many nations decorates the pitch.

Today the site is called Marlborough Sports Garden and is free and open to everyone.
