5v5 Soccer The game, the rules, the field

What is 5v5 soccer?

5v5 soccer is small-sided soccer with four field players and a goalkeeper per team. In the US it is mostly played in adult leagues, indoors or outdoors, on walled turf courts: the walls keep the ball in play, so there is no throw-in and hardly a pause, and every player is always involved. Futsal, the five-a-side game recognized by FIFA, is its hard-court relative.

U.S. Soccer has no 5v5 youth format: up to U8, kids play 4v4, from U9 7v7. Smaller formats can still be played, and many clubs and schools use small walled courts for training and pickup games.

The Rules

There is no single rulebook for 5v5: leagues set their own. These rules are common:

Usual Rules

  • Teams: four field players and a goalkeeper, substitutes come on and off during the game
  • Walls in play: the ball stays in play off the walls
  • No slide tackles and no rough contact
  • Goalkeeper's area: often only the goalkeeper may be inside it

Varies by League

  • Ball height: some leagues limit it to head height, others have no height rule
  • Heading: banned at some leagues
  • Goalkeeper: rules on leaving the area and on rolling or throwing the ball
  • Match length and restarts when the ball leaves the court

Field Size

There is no official 5v5 field size in the US; leagues and facilities choose their own. For comparison:

  • U.S. Soccer, 4v4 (U6 to U8): 25 to 35 yards long and 15 to 25 yards wide, goals up to 6' wide and 4' high (U.S. Soccer standards, game formats)
  • Futsal: 82' to 138' long and 52' to 82' wide, goals 10' x 6.5' (Futsal Laws of the Game)
  • Our courts: 100' x 65' with room for 5v5, 131' x 66' for 6v6 to 7v7, any other size on request

5v5 Questions

What is 5v5 soccer?

Small-sided soccer with four field players and a goalkeeper per team, usually in adult leagues on walled indoor or outdoor courts. The walls keep the ball in play, so the game is fast with lots of touches.

How big is a 5v5 soccer field?

There is no official 5v5 field size in the US; leagues and facilities choose their own. Our 100' x 65' court gives 5v5 plenty of room, 131' x 66' suits 6v6 to 7v7, and any other size is available on request. U.S. Soccer's youth formats are 4v4 up to U8 and 7v7 from U9.

Is 5v5 soccer the same as futsal?

Futsal is the five-a-side game recognized by FIFA, played on a hard court with touchlines, a low-bounce ball and 10' x 6.5' goals. 5v5 leagues often play on turf with walls instead. Our courts can be set up for either, with futsal lines and goals if you want them.

Can a 5v5 court be used without supervision?

Yes. TÜV Rheinland, the independent German testing body, tested the SoccerGround board system as a complete system and certified it to DIN EN 15312 for freely accessible multi-sport equipment.
